LGD Plans To Introduce A 55-inch Transparent OLED Panel TV For Home Use Or Commercialize It in 2023

On Feb. 21, south Korean media Outlet The Elec reported that LG Display (LG Display; LGD has proposed to LG Electronics to introduce transparent OLED TVS for home use.

LGD has proposed a TV with a 55-inch transparent OLED panel to LG Electronics' home entertainment division, which plans to continue reviewing the proposal, the sources said. The panel will be fixed to the TV like a traditional TV, rather than a panel that can be pulled in and out like LG's rollable OLED TV.

If approved by the business unit, development work could start in the second half of 2022, with a commercial launch in 2023, the sources added. LGD will likely offer transparent OLED panels with a reinforced glass overlay.

In fact, LG Electronics has introduced transparent OLED products in the past, but these products were developed by its Business solutions business unit, not for the home.

Xiaomi launched a 55-inch transparent OLED TV called Mi TV Lux, supplied by LGD, in 2020, but the model sold very little and cost a whopping 49,999 yuan.

Shipments of OLED TVS rose 80 percent from the previous year to 6.53 million units in 2021, according to market research firm Omdia. LG Electronics was the largest seller with 4.05 million units. Meanwhile, LGD produces 8 million OLED panels.
